Unofficial favorite day of the year: Halloween

work-in-progress_lydia_vampire_andrew-tong-artPeople who know me have realized long ago that I like the eerie and macabre. With Halloween just around the corner, I felt inspired to continue my elegant Vampire Ladies – all good things come in threes – and I have just completed Lydia. I think she turned out great, mysterious and dangerous at the same time.

After completing the digital artwork yesterday, which included spending a lot of time on the layers to create the details of her face making her complexion look almost translucent and ancient.

Here you can see the first prints I prepared to be distressed and glazed. Then the finished prints are positioned onto the handmade mounts and framed.

Lydia will be up for sale very shortly. Just in time for Halloween. Contact me if you are interested in having Lydia at your home.

The Making of Mickey Spiggot’s Great British Council Flats

Mickey Spiggot_Great British Council Flats_Andrew Tong Art_web

Last year, I first introduced “Mickey Spiggot” to the world. His persona is a montage of various characters I have encountered while growing up during the 1970s and 80s in South London. An affectionate if somewhat dodgy focus on that time of my life, every book and record cover contains reflections of my own life like the pieces of a puzzle.

The next step was to turn Mickey Spiggot’s book and record covers into three dimensional art pieces by using distressing techniques I had acquired as decorative artist where I had to make new things look old and worn. I have been enjoying the making of these books immensely. Right down to creating the perfect price tag (for the pictured piece the Woolworth tag, the shop has closed down a while ago, but used to sell bargain-priced books). And yes, these are real coffee stains.

Work in progress: Digital goes Painty

I have been away from painting for a while because I really enjoyed putting together the prints for the portraits of zombies, vampires and other strange creatures. These were done as digital collages, once finished I printed them and hand-finished them as over-sized cabinet cards before framing. So I thought I would try to paint some of them as well.

The first two I selected are “Lady Araneae” and “Peter”. All my artwork is quite colorful, so the feel of the imagery is quite different from the black and white digital originals. Halfway into painting these portraits I realized again why I enjoyed creating the originals digitally – I did not have to actually paint the faces. I just altered an existing photograph. So painting is them is a lot more work intensive. So here I am painting lots of hairs… not just on their heads also on the spiders’ legs. Little tiny hairs. Oh so many little tiny hairs… aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Mickey Spiggot’s Budgie Heritage Series: Cunts of Croydon

Cunts of Croydon by Mickey SpiggotMickey Spiggot is the founder and CEO of Budgie Publishing, which he believes to be the best way to publish his own works. Writing has always been one of his favourite past times (right up there with borrowing money).

Here Mickey Spiggot writes briefly of being an author and about his book “Cunts of Croydon”:

“I am an accomplished author with over 300 books under my belt. Everything from local history to erotic crime thrillers and pet care. In fact, I am believed to be Croydon’s most prolific author. Pictured is a copy of Cunts of Croydon. Writing this book has been a very personal journey for me as I come from a very long line of Croydon cunts. The Spiggots have made the lives of other Croydonians miserable for countless generations. So I have always wanted to write about the rich history of why so many cunts just love living in Croydon. In fact, Croydon is well-known for its over-abundance of cunts.
I have traced their beginnings from the Norman conquest unfolding through many generations to modern times. This epic volume contains many in-depth interviews such as with George Sriggs, Britain’s only recipient of Germany’s Iron Cross during World War 2.”

This volume has been out of print since 1983. But Mickey recently found a stack of them in a black bin bag underneath his stepdad’s old caravan in Leysdown on the Isle of Sheppey. A bit worse for wear but an integral part of our heritage.
